Goodbye Exceptionalism

What does this mean?

The National Intelligence Council's study is a probable future should the US not redefine its presence in the world. The future painted in the report is pretty bleak and concerning. It seems that history is turning on its head. Centuries ago, it was the West who dictated and manipulated the East financially and culturally. Now, India and China are economic titans. They're buying up Western companies and expressed interest in purchasing the big three auto companies. Now the Chinese and Arab sheiks are keeping us afloat with the billions the make of us from buying their cheap, poisonous products and fossil fuels.

I read the AP article on the report which mentioned that nations will turn to a mixed economic system where government has a greater control over private industry due to the global economic downturn and illusory capitalism. Nations in Latin and South America who suffered under the illusion of capitalism during the 20th century are most likely to adopt this model.

An increase in resources wars is extremely concerning. We've already seen food riots in Africa and Hati this past year dues to commodities speculation. I guess one good thing about it is now the government doesn't have to wrap its next military adventure in some noble lie and run a propaganda campaign. They can be honest with us now. We also invade Canada since the report stated that global warming will allow easier Canadians easier access to now inaccessible areas of their territory containing proven energy reserves. The same is true for Russia according to the report. The Iranians are on the cusp of controlling Iraq and are slated to become major player in the Middle East. The other Middle East nations may fall into place behind Iran.

The planet is shrinking due to the constant raise in population, greed, corruption and misuse. I tend to think nihilistically in regarding the future of the world. I just think that we are beyond change and are steadily holding onto order, but it won't last. Eventually it'll come crashing down. Hopefully, I'll be dead by then.

I present to you my favorite albums of 2008 in no particular order.

The Foreign Exchange - Leave It All Behind

I was wonderfully surprised when I initially heard Foreign Exchange's second album. Their first album was mostly Hip Hop, but for their sophomoric release they left Hip Hop all behind. The album blends R&B, Rock, House and a little Jazz beautifully. Nicolay's instrumentation are memorizing and rhythmic. The vocals, supplied by Phonte, Darrin Brockington and Musinah, are simple yet poignant. Nothing's overdone, complex or appealing to lowest common denominator. Just beautiful musicianship from this group of young, independent artists. Cop It.

Grooveman Spot - Raw Humberger

Grooveman Spot's latest is a complication of 70s and 80s jazz and R&B tunes that inspired them, they find funky or serve as sampling sources. Whatever the reason, these Hip Japanese cats have a great ear for music. Included on the complication are Les McCan, Herbie Hancock, Roy Ayers, Atlantic Starr, Loose Ends, Rufus and Chaka Khan and many more. Get it and Groove out!!

Q-Tip - The Renaissance

Not much of a Hip Hop fan, but i'll always make a concession for A Tribe Called Quest and any other of the group members side projects. Q-Tip always delivers refined Hip Hop with lovely jazz samples. The Renaissance doesn't disappoint and Q-Tip stays true to his craft. He's not like some of those rappers who were big in the 90s and want to make a come back by being appealing to a younger demographic and lowest common denominators. Track 10, Life Is Better, is a real gem and Norah Jones sounds stellar.

Simbad feat. Melo/Abdul Shyllon - After The Dance

A nice cover of Marvin Gaye's After The Dance by Simbad, a beatmaker out of the UK. It's faster than the original, but just as soulful.

Jazzanova - Of All The Things
Jazzanova fans have anxiously waited four years for something new from these German soul brothers. For a bunch of middle aged German men, they certainly have an ear for black music. The album is a mix of 60s and70s style soul music, a little bossa, classic jazz, a little folk, a little hip hop and a little house. The album is somewhat more mainstream than there previous work since the album was released through, Verve instead of their indie company, The Sonar Kollectiv. My favorites tracks are Rockin You Eternally, What Do You Want?, Look What You're Doin To Me and Lucky Girl.

2000 Black - A Next Set A Rockers
Although my favorites are listed in no particular order, I must say that this album was quite remarkable. Every track is audio goodness. 2000 Black consists of two beatmakers out of West London who uses the best global soul vocalists to sing on the tracks. The album consist of what is know as Global Soul and Neu Jazz. The album is representative of those nuanced terms because of its international origin, sound and appeal. Groups such as 2000 Black aren't very popular in mainstream music USA, but in the UK there tracks can be heard on BBC radio and mainstream Japanese radio stations. 2000 Black's music is so refined and exceedingly sophiscated in regards to their mainstream USA counterparts. I just cannot understand the lack of popularity within mainstream USA music culture.

When In Doubt, Say Anything. Random Thoughts III

I.) Since I appear to have a form of writer's ADD unless given a specific topic (perhaps it's due to creative laziness), I'll lay a few random thoughts on the table.

This past Friday, the new James Bond flick, Quantum of Solace, was released. The film has received mixed reviews. Some love it, some hate it. I haven't seen the film yet since I'm not that big of a Bond fan. I enjoy watching spy movies, but the Bond franchise is a romanticized and fantasied view of spies. I prefer spy movies similar to Syriana or The Good Shepard because they are somewhat rooted in reality.

What piqued my interest in the new Bond flick was something mentioned on Democracy Now! in regards to the Boliva. Apparently, the film's villian is some global industrial titan masking as an environmentalist that aims to privitize Boliva water supply. It seems something straight out of The Shock Doctrine.

II.) It's beginning to look like the 1990s again. Gas is under two dollars when many predicted oil would be $200 a barrel plus at this time and old DNC faces are making their way back to positions in government. Since the election, the nation has learned of its new Secutary of State (Hilary Clinton), Secretary of Health and Human Services (Tom Daschle) and supposed Commerce Secutary (Bill Richardson). I am a bit miffed at Obama picking former Clinton Admistration officials and DNC stalwarts to serve in his upcoming Adminstration. I thought he was going to bring change and it was a new day and all that. His progressive cred has taken a hit. I'll cut him some slack and hold off any criticism until he's completed his first 100 days in office.

III.) This Tuesday marks the end of one of the greatest serialized dramas to ever air on televison. The Shield comes to an end after seven seasons of watching Vic Mackey and the Strike Team lay down the law and break it. The 90 minute series finale is suppose to have four deaths, one that will leave the audience shocked. The series creator, Shawn Ryan, said he won't pull a bullshit Sopranos ender and will give the audience the closure we deserve. I cannot wait until Tuesday!!!

Stupid, RIch And Inconsequential

Instead of art in its conventional sense, I'd like to discuss a sub genre of media I totally despise. Since the turn of the century, the entertain industry has been obsessed with the bullshit "reality television" craze. These shows are deemed "reality television" because the subjects are not "real actors" (but most participate as starting point for a career in acting) and the shows are supposedly "unscripted" (more utter bullshit). While I can tolerate the idiotic and exploititve reality televsion contest shows such as Survivor and American Idol, I have utter contempt for the so called reality television that focus on the young, dumb and rich.

Shows such as Laguna Beach, The Hills and Baldwin Hills which air on two of the worst television channels ever, MTV and BET, are pointless and baffling. I fail to understand the allure and appeal of these shows. It cannot be to inform the viewing public of the plight of the rich. In spite of what others may say about wealth, self worth, validation and all that other psycho babble bullshit, if you're rich in America, life isn't that bad for you and you certainly don't need a show to flaunt your youth, affluency and in most cases, ignorance. Admittingly, I have never watched any of these shows past three minutes. For the life of me, I cannot think of what purpose they serve. Perhaps they try to equalize rich young people with average young people across the country and in the West. I don't know, I just hate the fucking shows. I don't give a shit about rich, young assholes complaining about their quaint relationships and quarreling over bullshit.

The youth of this nation would be better servered with more documentaries and informative programs on real issues affecting the majority of young people who aren't rich and don't live in some affluent enclave in California. These shows are a waste of resources, intelligence and a contributing factor to why many young people are fucked up and full of shit.

Maria Full of Smack (just couldn't resist)

What are your thoughts on "Maria Full of Grace/María llena eres de gracia", especially regarding the religious symbolism in the film. Almost every scene in the movie has a religious icon in the background and it's no coincidence the protagonist's name is Maria (Mary) and she's with child. Also, does this guy look familiar?

My feelings towards the film, Maria Full of Grace, are lukewarm to borderline detest. The film had a slow start. Granted, the film is not a shoot'em up flick, but the first part of the movie was extremely boring. Maybe those actors just sucked, but all I wanted to do was yarn continuously and twiddle my thumbs. For a movie about a depressing issue, I wasn't all that depressed or sad about the characters in the film. I was like "meh" towards most of them except the sister, Carla. She did a terrific job especially when learning of Lucy's death. The actress who played Maria was just flat out boring. Her acting did not invoke any kind of positive emotion in me.

Once the film moved into the drug muling phase, it became somewhat interesting. The scenes of Maria swallowing the smack filled condoms were hard to stomach. I get nervous swallowing vitamins. It was quite amazing how the actress simulated swallowing those pellets.

I just find it hard to like this movie. It seems unrealistic. Perhaps its my own ignorance at play, but I always drug dealers treated females drug mules as property. Viewing them as vessels of desperation and easily exploitable. In the film, Javier (the old boss drug dealer I think) treated her like a valued employee. Franklin, his recruiter or scout, enticed her easily like a CIA case officer turning an asset. I thought those narco dudes were chauvinist and brash.

The largest stemming pile of bullshit in the movie was when Maria and Blanca returned the stolen drugs to the two low level dealers in New Jersey. There is no way those girls would've gotten away unscathed and paid in real life.

As for the religious symbolism, I did not notice any until we briefly discussed it class. I do not remember the scene of the guy making the sign of the cross. I even missed the most obvious of the main character's biblical name and the movie’s cover art depicting Maria being given a pellet as if she was being given communion. Also, her pregnancy saved her from jail. The pellets did not burst as well, killing her and the fetus, so that may also serve as a allegory for Jesus saves or something. Maria also worked with flowers as the Virgin Mary is associated with gardens. My aunt has mid size statue of the virgin Mary in her garden back in New Orleans.

Orlando Tobon's community activism for exploited drug mules is great. He is a courageous man for assisting these people without fear of reprisals from the cartels. I would fear being shot up by some cartel hit squad for influencing their assets or being played by the Feds for intel on the cartels from the mules.

History May Repeat Itsself (Great Topic)

Choose one of the interviews from this list of conversations with Great Depression survivors, listen to it, then write a small review detailing your impressions concerning this person(s) oral history.

After listening to a few of the interviews conducted by Studs Terkel (R.I.P), I was quite struck by the interview with Elsa Ponselle. Elsa Ponselle poignantly articulated what life was like for average Americans during The Great Depression. The Great Depression was economic upheaval in twenty century America. Due to greedy Wall Street bankers and investors who purchased stock ten percent on the margin. Eventually, the market crashed spurring massive job loss, runs on the banks and the deconstruction of the American standard of living.

Elsa began her narrative on the issue of race. She remarked that minority children and parents easily adapted to the austere times of The Great Depression. Unlike their white, European counterparts, Elsa mentioned the Greeks and Italians, were dismayed and found themselves in the same position as the minorities they derided as lazy and second class. She continued by recalling a conversation she had with her nephew who believed the stereotype that blacks were inherently lazy. She retorted with a threat of physical violence (perfectly justified IMHO) and equated her nephew's father inability to find a job during the Great Depression with joblessness experienced by blacks.

Next, Elsa described the fear the Great Depression instilled in her that remained as she participated in the interview. The fear of long lasting joblessness and the insecurity of maintaining a job plagued the minds of all Depression survivors years after the crisis.

Elsa also remarked how The Great Depression humbled the American public. Everyone felt a sense of connected through these rough times. There were no superficial, counter and sub cultural barriers that separated people. The tragedy brought families together mainly out of necessity and survival.

Elsa also commented on the generational gap and value of a dollar. Depression era survivors were more prone to cling to every penny out of fear another crash while the young people of the 70s, today's baby boomers, spent carefree.

As I sat and listened to Elsa's interview continuously, not only to write this blog, but also as a beacon of reference. Her words vividly parallels what we see, read and hear what's happened and happening in contemporary America. This past Friday it was revealed that the nation's jobless rate is at a fourteen year high. Every week it seems thousands are laid off as businesses close or move to lax, greener pastures. Like survivors of The Great Depression, working men and women today are fearful of job loss especially with a scarce job market. Gone are the days of quitting a job and obtaining another two weeks later. It takes months and sometimes a year. No worker is immune from this phenomenon. From the blue collar worker toiling in the factory to the wall street broker scheming the elderly to invest in some shitty stocks, we all face the same risk.

I was also struck by Elsa's mention of a revolution by victims of the Depression. It reminds me of an article I read in my American History class last semester. From what I remember, it appears in a 1930s edition of the Nation magazine. This reporter went around the country observing the effects of the Depression on the public. Towards the end of the article, it mentioned a comment from an out of work farmer (unsure) who made rumors of a populist revolution should the government not act to ease the pain the Depression caused.

One aspect in which today's economic peril does not parallel the Great Depression is the behavior of the rich. Elsa described the rich during the Depression as subdued. They diligently concealed their affluence. Today, the rich arrogantly flaunts its wealth through a corrupted mainstream media. Torture yourself by looking at the programming channels such as BET, MTV and VH1. Shows were parents shell out thousands upon thousands of dollars for elaborate birthday parties and "reality television" serials showcasing a bunch of whiny, rich assholes.

Listening to Elsa's words impressed me tremendously. She recounted her experience during a such harsh time with pride and strength. She is(was) a woman of immense courage. I shudder to think about what would happen if I lost my job. My hope is that new shift in government will uplift the economy. Hopefully this can be done without another World War.

The More Things Change

What do you think the effects of both a Democratic President and Congress will be in the next four years?


Obama and the Dems accomplished what many felt they'd squander at the last minute. We will soon have a unified government under the Democrat Party. It remains to be seen how the country will change in terms of the Dem domination, but they have hit the ground running and are anxiously awaiting the passing of the torch come January. Without a doubt, the economy will trump all other issues of the unified Dem government. It will overshadow climate change, health care and energy independence. The only other issue that may get equal time will be Middle East policy.

Obama and Pelosi are following Ben Bernanke's advise of granting a second stimulus package. They are both in favor of the idea. Obama has already stated that he will try to rush through a stimulus package at the beginning of the term. I hope Obama and the Dems are able to provide tax relief for the lower class. I also hope they do not break their promise of punishing companies who ship jobs overseas for cheap labor and nonexistent labor standards. I also hope they strengthen regulation of Wall Street. Some doubt the Dems will be able to hold these promises because Obama is looking to some of the same people that brought us this globalization shit to serve in his administration. It seems he wants a repeat of the Clinton Administration by his possible nomination of Lawrence Summers as Sectary of Treasury and Rahm Emmanuel, his Chief of Staff.

Obama and the Dems will rule as centrist with a slight left leaning. I do not see the left leaning aspect to be evident policy ways. Just when giving interviews, sound bites and such (i.e. bullshitting).

I honestly don't know what will exactly happen. The Dems and Obama are promising a lot and have those huge obstacles in the of a retracting economy and high deficit spending.

At least Obama is working to undo some of the maladies of the Bush Administration. It's a start, but we won't know how things will improve or degenerate until he actually takes office. They talked a good time, but we must wait and see if they're able to deliver.

Random Thoughts II

Since I'm too lazy and brain dead at the moment to come up with a central topic, I'll write about a few unaffiliated issues and ideas.

It appears that another tragic shooting may stoke the everlasting debates of gun control and possibly, media violence. The latest incident involves an eight year old kid who murdered his father and his father's friend. The article describes the act as premeditated and mentions the father trained the kid on how to use firearms for hunting purposes. Individual citizens interviewed for the article described the child as normal and a good kid, but obviously something happened to precipitate to violent and tragic incident. The kid is either psychologically damaged or was physically and / or sexually abused by the father and the father's friend. Of course the anti gun nuts and media scapegoaters will blame the gun itself and media violence before all the facts are known.

I do not own a gun and lived a violent city plagued by gun violence, but I do not see who draconian gun control will put an end to gun violence or prevent some nut from shooting up a school or office building. A gun is an inanimate and harmless object until it is wielded by a person with evil intentions. I am in favor of some gun control legislation such as a ban on straw purchases and implementing a potential gun owner's mental health in the background check process.

The blame game will also be extended to violent media. This argument needs to die. They argue as if violent media emits subliminal messages instructing children or anyone else to kill. I've played violent games and watched all types of violent movies and television programs and never taken a life or felt the urge to take a life. Why don't these people understand that when tragic shootings occur it is more of an indictment of the mental health system, economy and/or the familial environment of the parties involved then some other external factor such violent media.

As the year nears a close I am quite bothered that I have not been able to find any new news on the release date of Fat Freddy's Drop new album. It was suppose to drop this month. The seventh last I heard, but the seventh has past and no FFD :(!! They have been gracious to release two new singles and will give subscribers to their newsletter a free single this December. I hope it's not The Camel since I already have it. Hopefully its this one:

Lastly, I must say that Fallout 3 has met all my expectations and deserves Game Of The Year. It is the perfect blend of action and RPG elements. This game is extremely haunting and eerie even when traversing the DC wasteland during the daylight. I cannot play this game at night because it's just too damn disturbing.

The Congo

What's all this about?

The BBC article describes that mysterious exodus of tens of thousands of refugees from a Congolese refugee camp. A twelve vechile UN convoy bearing medicine expected to treat the destitute refugees, but found a near ghost camp. These poor, displaced Congolese are caught in the middle of a civil and resource wars. The nation has been enthralled in violence and war since the mid nineties. It was always a rebel force versus the government. During the first Congo war, it was then rebel leader, Laurent Kabila(a proxy of Rwanda and Uganda) versus then cheif executive of the country, Mobutu Sese Seko (who came to power via a coup in 1965 and ruled the country as a tryant). Laurent Kabila was big chief for a minute and in 2001 succummed to an assassin's bullet (his own bodyguard apparently). Ten days later, his son, Joseph Kabila took over as president. Now, the son of a supposed freedom fighter fights against another supposed freedom fighter, Laurent Nkunda, an elite rebel leader in the country.

Admittingly(my favorite word as of late), I really don't pay much attention to news from this part of the world as I do the Middle East or China. As a black man with African roots at some point in my lineage, it is quite shameful that I neglect what's has happened and is currently happening there. One reason is the origin of these conflicts are quite complex to understand. It seems the mainstream media loves to chalk it up as those crazy, wild Africans hacking and slashing each other to death over tribal cirucumstances or fueds centries old. Yet, they rarely explore the economic factors behind these conflicts (which is probably the root cause) or show that these conflicts were born out of colonist and neoconlonist agendas from extenal nations. Not

I seem to always go off on some radical, leftist tangent, but its important to put these issue in some proper context instead of those crazy Africans. It seems they're fighting for basic human dignity and restorting to exteme barbery to secure what we in the West are given by default.

As for where the refugees disappeared to, I really don't know. The article infers that they fled fearing a clashes between the rebels and government backed troops. The aid workers discovered another camp that was flattened. I suppose the refugees feared they'd suffer a similar fate and fled for some kind of green pasture in that battered nation. The act of fledding is just as dangerous as staying. The men are cut down , women raped, multiated and killed, children, raped(both male and female), sold into slavery or turned into a child solder. War is hell.

In Two Days........(Another political rant, kind of)

Us plebeians will engage in that certain illusion of democracy known as the popular vote which where we will cast our ceremonial vote for progress or idiocy. One the most electrifying election season's in the nation's history finally comes to an end. The Obama/Biden ticket is slated to win. Some predict landslide others a modest victory. For the McCain/Barracuda camp, hope is still alive well in that some predict an upset victory although its highly unlikely.

On Tuesday, the lines at the polls are expected to be extremely long. Folks voting rights were assaulted like the situation in Ohio two weeks ago, the typical GOP disinformation campaign trying to fool folk into voting on Wednesday instead Tuesday and the continued slander of ACORN for doing their job.

Not only do we have to worry about voter fraud in such an historic election, but the white supremacy, neo nazi movement is planning a resurgence should Obama be elected. It's like what the War in IRAQ or OIL did for Bin Laden and Al Qaeda. I don't see what these assholes hope to accomplish. They can never overthrow the government no matter how many times they run around the woods shooting and blowing shit up. I guess they're believers in the phony JFK assassination fantasy that only one man can kill a president. Maybe in the 19th century, but it won't work today. If they want to kill Obama so bad, they had better have a couple Secret Service agents on the payroll and a technical service officer within the Secret Service or CIA. There is no way two teenage, tranny looking neo nazis can kill Obama all by themselves. I guess they forgot Obama has a highly trained and effective Secret Service detail that'll put their asses down before laying eyes on Obama. Also, if you're going to assassinate a future president, don't announce it on MySpace.

On to something else now. The Barracuda has made a fool of herself once again. Not only does she now know the role of the VP, but she doesn't understand the First Amendment as well. According to her, it is affront to free speech for the media to refute the lies she spews against Obama. It’s amazing that Conservatives who are so "pro-American" and love this country better than anyone else can adore such a dumbass with secessionist ties. I believe McCain was going for the genital vote in picking Palin as his VP candidate. He wanted the women who vote with their vagina and men who vote with their cocks. The dick and pussy vote. Hmm, interesting. If she's the future of the Republican party, then what will really change?

Junior Kimbrough

I chose Junior Kimbrough for this little descriptive write up. I listened to three songs via YouTube, Lonesome In My Mind, Sad Days, Lonely Nights and I Gotta Try You Girl. I neither enjoyed nor hated listening to the three tunes. I am quite indifferent.

I did not enjoy the lyrics of the songs. His singing, in my humble opinion, did not appeal to me at all. I understand its the Blues and its suppose to be organic, raw and visceral, but it just sounds like some incoherent old man moaning and ranting (like many of blog posts). I did not feel moved in anyway by his sing. The only idea that popped into my head was STFU!!! That deep, rural Mississippi accent was another factor that ruined it for me as well.

I did enjoy the songs' instrumentation. The songs had a nice heavy yet mellow percussiveness with a tinge of jazz. The guitars were great as well. I love all guitar instruementation except in heavy metal (Metellica's One is an exception. would have never heard of this song if not for Beavis and Butthead) and that pop country shit. I could envision myself listening to the songs' instrumentation endlessly without feeling bored or annoyed even though its repetitive. Its something about it that makes hooks you in. Some subminal audiotory factor that keeps you attentitve.

Indifference is my overall feeling towards Mr. Kimbrough's music. I'm not a real fan of the Blues. The only Blues musicians who I listen to are Nina Simone and Eric Clapton although they are not entirely Blues musicans. They've sung various Bluesey tunes. Eric even did a few albums dedicated to the genre. Kimbrough's flavor of the Blues has a large following and deserves to be heard. I'd rather mainstream mass marketing of his music than some of the shit that permeates the radio waves nowadays.

Thoughts on You See Me Laughin'

My thoughts on the documentary, You See Me Laughin', are tepid. The film profiled the tragic yet talented lives of a group of Blues musicians from rural Mississippi. I truly enjoyed listening to the musicians recount their life experiences and simplisitc yet eloquent philosphy. Yardbrough's retelling of the incident where he shot a man in the head was humorous and complex. I can't recall his analogy about the guy jumping the fence or something like that, but it was quite funny. I was shocked by his apathy at shooting a man in the head. I'm not sure how you could justify shooting some one in the back of the head as justifible homicide and then serve a six month sentence. Honestly, I cannot recall his story with vivid detail, but I do remember those two key features.

T-Model Ford's tale of child abuse by his father was disturbing. At first I thought he was describing rape, but, apparently, his father beat his testicles.........and caused bleeding......... I'd sing the Blues as well if that happened to me. Adding his turbulent relationship with his wife and her attempt to kill him, it's only natural for him to be drawn to the genre. His run-in with the law was interesting as well. Again, I can't remember his motive, but I believe he stabbed some guy in the throat, hid in a ditch for two day, but was eventually arrested and convicted.

Ciddell last name I can't recell had a very innovative and resourceful way of playing the guitar after being trampled and major illness. It was amazing watching him play with one hand in mal form.

The illustrations of incidents in the musicians lives were pretty neat as well. Reminded me of Kill Bill I.

My only complaint against the movie was the deep, rural, southern accents. It was difficult to understand what they were trying to convey at certain points in the film. Perhaps it was the bad audio settings of the sound system.

Overall, I enjoyed the film. Wouldn't watch it a second time, but I would recommend it to others.

Thoughts On Classmate's Review

After looking through the class's blogs, only a few completed reviews of their favorite movies (hell I just completed mine about five minutes ago). Of the movies that were reviewed, Back To The Future was the only one I seen. Unfortunately, I have very vague memory of the film. I do remember it starred Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd and some white woman. I also remember it featured a time traveling Delorean. I don't remember anything about the plot, climax or ending except time traveling hence the title. The only notable aspect of the movie I truly remember is Huey Lewis and the News's kick ass tune "Power of Love".



Aside from that there's nothing more I can add. I only seen snippets of the film. The plot never attracted me (only remember .5% of it) A time traveling Delorean that flew? The Doc should have sold them to narco traffickers (could've done a Miami Vice crossover episode). Again, I have vague memory of the film so my critique is significantly flawed, but its nice that Nick and others enjoyed this film.

"Yo Homie, Is That My Briefcase?"

One movie that ranks in the top five of my favorite movies of all time is the action - drama film, Collateral. Released in August of 2004, Collateral is another one of those films that calls into question destiny, fate and free will with a true crime back drop in the city of Angels.

Tom Cruise stars as Vincent, an intelligent, witty and pragmatic assassin in L.A. to do his hits for a narco cartel and get out before sunrise. Max, played by Jamie Foxx, is a mundane taxi driver oblivious to Vincent's killer self. Max soon learns who Vincent truly is after taxing Vincent to his first hit and the film kicks into high gear until its end.

The cinematography of the film was truly impressive. It was shot using an HD camera that added realistic and gritty visuals to the film and made the shots of Los Angeles come alive as if it were to a main character in the film. The choice of filming locations worked as well such as subway tunnels, parking garages, alleyways and ethnic music clubs. It portrayed the city as a living entity not just a simple inanimate setting.



Foxx and Cruise gave two of the best performances of their careers in this film. The film's was full of sharp and witty dialouge. Vincent's seriousness and cunning-ness was best articulated in the following line (my favorite line from the film) : "Okay, look, here's the deal. Man, you were gonna drive me around tonight, never be the wiser, but El Gordo got in front of a window, did his high dive, we're into Plan B. Still breathing? Now we gotta make the best of it, improvise, adapt to the environment, Darwin, shit happens, I Ching, whatever man, we gotta roll with it." Cruise's delivery was so cool and ballsy I was like "FUCK YEAH!" Foxx also delivered a powerful scene when he posed as Vincent for a meet with the cartel representative that ordered the hits (played by Javier Bordem, something I just realized like yesterday):



The film's score was quite cosmopolitan. James Newton Howard's percussive instrumentals during suspenseful scenes added piercing tension.
The film was more than just a hitman killing and an innocent guy getting caught up in the mix. Vincent represented fate with his fine zeal of sticking to the plan and not making an diversions. When Max did make diversions violence soon followed:



Max represented free will by challenging the wrecking force that is Vincent. Max tested fate constantly through the film in his failed escape attempt after they visited his mother in the hospital, destroying Vincent's dossier, contacting Detective Fanning (played by a chulo looking Mark Ruffolo) and his failed attempt to prevent Vincent from serving the hit on Jazz man (played by Barry Shabaka):



In the end, free will succeeded. After Max discovered the last target on Vincent's hit list was Annie(played by Jada Pickett Smith), the federal prosecutor and passenger of his who he was quite enamored with, Max outsmarted Vincent. In a shootout in the federal building and a chase throughout downtown L.A. which ended on a subway train, Vincent succumbed to Max in a hail of gunfire.



Finally, as a fan of Michael Mann's true crime works, there was no way I'd sleep on this. I was pumped for this movie since seeing the trailer in the spring of 2004. I re watched five seasons of Miami Vice before the release of the 2006 remake(a highly underrated movie). I've watched Heat so many times that I've memorized the notably dialogue. Mann is one of the preeminent directors of the American cinema. Can't wait for Public Enemies.

As the election year nears its end, the McCain / Palin ticket continues to assault its near dead campaign by taking a queue from the past. Instead of using the sensible, intelligent and classy tactic of sticking to the issues, they have chosen to appeal to their inner nazi by questioning the patriotism of their opponents and any other American who doesn't agree with their WHITE and rosy view of the United States.

All this talk of pro American pockets of the country, a GOP Congresswoman calling for the media to suss out other Congress members for anti Americanism and robo calls implying Obama's a terrorist is reviving the spirit of the McCarthyism era. This period in history was known as the Second Red Scare and spanned a little more than decade. Senator Joeseph McCarthy sought communists at all levels of society from those employed by the federal government, union leaders, teachers, actors and anyone else narced out to the House Un-American Activities Committee. This was a dangerous time when the civil rights of citizens were curtailed and lives ruined all in the name of some inflated communist threat.

It pains yet relieves me to see these neoconservatives that hijacked the Republican party resort to such tactics. Its pains me because its now is really not the time for further divide us politically. We are on the cusp of significant global and domesitc changes and do need this silly divisive bullshit to distract us from progressing as a nation.

I'm relieved because most Americans aren't buying it. They see that these tactics are indicative of desperation not a geniune concern. McCain, Palin and others of the neocon GOP know there world is over and the only way to stay relevant is to scare the shit out of people, but it won't work this time. Why should Americans fear Osama Bin Laden (dead anyways) or Al Quaeda when the economic terrorists on Wall Street may deliver us another Depression?

I guess the GOP has already accepted its lost and is like "FUCK IT".

Palin herself needs to answer for un American activities regarding her ties to the Alaskan secessionist movement. Her husband was once a member, therefore she is right? Isn't that the logic the used against Obama regarding Wright and Ayers? That bitch should be the first to appear before Michele Bachmann's new HUAC (oh wait, she's another GOP bitch that's going to lose her seat soon).

What are the main events shown here and who do they concern?

The main events shown in the W trailer spanned his entire adult life.

1. Bush's bizarre press conference - As the American public has come to learn, Bush is one shitty orator. Blissfully ignorant and divorced reality it seems. This should concern everyone. It shows he's out of touch with average folk and treats his job like a video game. He fucks up, no real consequences for him. Just runaway to his rural enclave and block it out.
2. His history of alcoholism - This concerns himself. His own personal weakness for falling short of being the great elite WASP like his criminal father and grandfather.
3. His ownership of the Texas Rangers - Another attempt to please daddy Bush and be part of that elite legacy.
4. His experience in the oil industry - Bush was involved with Harken and Arbusto. I forgot the particulars, but one was bailed out by the Saudis and he was accused of insider trading when Harken was about to belly up. It should be no surprised that he's self serving, criminal and deceptive as president. He's been there before and he's a Bush.
5. Enhanced Interrogation Techniques (Torture) - Bush has already stated that America does not torture, but no one believes him except the tiny minority that still thinks he's doing a fine job (the military industrial finanical complex). This should concern us all as it has subverted our global influence, killed innocents and increased terrorism.
6. Time in the Texas Air National Guard - Through his father's connection, Bush was able to bypass Vietnam and serve stateside where he parited and coked up. This should concern veterans and troops who are programmed to admire a man who never truly served his country and likes to play soldier.
7. Pretzelgate - The incident when Bush almost croaked by choking on a pretzel. This should concern everyone as well. Its always important to chew your food properly before swallowing.
   
8. Protests - Bush's presidency has sparked a wave of anti american sentiment around the world. This should concern all Americans as its counter productive to our standing as a nation, effects our traveling habits and makes us easy targets.
9. Crawford - Bush's enclave when he's shirking his duites or going on one of many vacations. This should concern all working people.
10. War In Iraq Redux - Wouldn't be a Bush movie without this event. This concerns us all as it is the event that's directed all this global hatred at us.
11. State of the Union - I'm assuming the one after 9/11 where he uttered the axis of evil of line. It kicked the War on Terror farce.
12. Mission Accomplished - Bush's notable role of playing soldier where declared an end to the Iraq War II. Military vets and enlisted should be ashamed.
13. WMD - The lie that started it all. It should concern us all, but not surprising given this man's character.
14. 9/11 - Conservative Bush who promised a humble foreign policy, lashed out at Clinton and liberal interventionism for nation building yet does the same with his own War On Terror to democratize the Middle East. This should conern Republicans as its another sign of their hypocrisy.
    

At Random

A year ago, I was watching Current TV (YouTube meets CNN) and watched a piece or pod as their called on the channel on a fascinating custom in the Arab world, grown men holding hands in public. I was quite surprised to see Arab men engaging in what we in the West deem homosexual behavior. Especially in a country such as Syria where homosexuality is a crime and punishable by battery and possibly death. In ultra conservative pockets of the Arab world, it is criminal for a man and woman to hold hands publicly.

In the Arab world, men hold hands as a sign of close friendship and deep affection. It is not at all homosexual. In the pod, two of the men interviewed stated that they were married and one even had three wives. Don't mean to sound cultural insensitive, but I find it odd that men in a part of the world where homosexuals experience state sanctioned battery and sometimes death are so expressive in their feelings and not have to worry about the gay connotation. I also noticed this in the documentary, Baghdad High, about four Iraqi teenage male friends trying live a normal life in a war zone. The friends were quite expressive in how they felt about each other. Engaging in non sexual displays of deep affection that many Westerners would deem homosexual. I personally don't find offensive or gross. I think its great. It shows the Middle East is some what progressive.

Switching gears, I'd like to speak on Sarah Barracuda. Recently, the loser VP nominee stated some parts of the country were pro American and others were not. Its sad this patriotism questioning bullshit is rearing its ugly head again as it did after 9/11. To Palin, pro America is neo conservative, white and fake ass christian. If she love neocon, rural, white and fake christian America, why did she go to NewYork (hell for her ilk) do SNL this weekend? These scare tactics are reflective of a defeated GOP. They've fucked up so bad that there last act before the fall is to try and scare the shit out of people for a vote, but it won't work because the tactic is played out. They've spent their fear mongering captial with all those fake ass terror alerts of the past years and the whole duct tape and plastic debacle. This woman need to shut the fuck up, enjoy her 15 minutes, take her lost like a man and go back to the great WHITE Alaska. Maybe she'll get a TV or book deal out of this. Anything that'll keep her away from governing over folk.

Detachment

Why is this the #1 Movie in the United States (besides the obvious fact that more people paid for tickets to it than any other film)?

There's nothing new about Americans watching and doing stupid shit. After watching the trailer for Beverly Hills Chihuahua, I did find it some what humorous and cute. That little dog is adorable. My neighbors in my old neighborhood had a Chihuahua named Tequila that was very similar to the Taco Bell dog. The dog was quite friendly and did not meet the mean spirited stereotype assigned to Chihuahuas. Unfortunately, Tequila died in the flood. Sentimentally, I can't take fault with the movie or find it perplexing that its number one at the box office again.

Cute, talking animals always draw in the folks with small children. I haven't looked up statistics (nor do I care to) on the demography of the audience who view this movie. I'm assuming the majority of the audiences consisted of dual and single parents with small children since it was Disney film. Throw in some animal lovers and pedophiles as well. There's also the Paris Hilton effect. I recall seeing commercials and advertisements of her with her Chihuahua so add daft teenage girls and young women as well.

With all that's going wrong in the world right now, people need a release from reality. Movies, video games, music and other mediums of entertainment provides that outlet. People see, hear and experience losing money, rumors of a depression, the election and ongoing military conflicts with no hope of resolution. They don't want their avenues of escapism to reflect these uncertain realities. It is the reason why the latest bunch of Iraq war movies bombed at the box office. Why see movies on an ongoing event when you can learn of it for free from books, newspapers and the internet?

In some way, I share this view. I use to love seeing those movies with a message and sociopolitical dramas of today's events, but as things continue go down an uncertain path I'd rather see a horror film or some mindless action flick. Well, I did see Body of Lies this past weekend and found it entertaining, but I only watched it for Leo's and Crowe's performance. I really didn't give a shit about the message.

I am not making excuses for Americans to remain ignorant of what's going on the world. It is times like these where we must be the most alert and on guard, but its overwhelming and the average man and woman have powerful interests ensuring that they remain ignorant.

Gaia Nazis

One type of fundamentalist mindset I abhor is rabid environmentalism in the West. I more respect for a white supremacy than I do an annoying, far leftist environmental nut job. My disdain for these people does not stem from a disagreement in viewpoint, but the manner in which they try to indoctrinate you.

Like all fundamentalists, the Gaia Nazis come heavy with the scare tactics. As Christian fundamentalists foretell of eternal banishment to hell if you refuse to become their mental slave, Gaia Nazis hold you responsible for the pending destruction of the earth and cession of life because you don't walk 40 miles to school, drive an expensive fuel efficient vehicle or spend five dollars for a carton of organic eggs. I am total agreement that we as global village must do everything possible to improve the environment, but demonizing non believers or folks still on the fence concerning their message do more harm than getting people on their side. When I see or read something by one of these people, I become combative and less interested in giving a shit about the environment.

When the scare tactics don't work, they resort to insults. One that really pisses me off is their pre conceived notions of pickup and SUV drivers, the scum of the earth to them. To them, men who drive pickup trucks and SUVs are insecure about their prick size. Driving large vehicles makes them feel like manly and macho. While this may be true for some men, it is certainly not true for me and men in my family that drive trucks and SUVs. My primary reason for driving a pickup truck is for safety. I know it’s a lame reason due to the roll over risk, but I do feel safe driving on the interstate than driving a smaller car. I am a very responsible and humble driver and not reflective of the stereotype these environ Nazis have against SUV and pick up drivers. And what about women who drive these large vehicles? Are they compensating for small vaginas or not have big boobs?

They proclaimed the high cost of gas this summer was the result of peak oil and advocated the cost go as high as $10-25 a gallon. I to believe oil is a finite resource and all for a full fledge Manhattan project to kick us of our oil habit, but a situation like that would plunge us into a Depression than bad mortgages and greedy bastards on Wall Street ever will. Those who suggested speculation or devaluation of the dollar due deficit spending from the wars were insulted. As the price of gas continues to fall, it seems the speculation and economic factors were the primary causes of the gas price increase not peak oil.

Before any significant, life changing environment policy can be implemented, a radical change in government is needed. The bitching of obnoxious and self righteous fundamentalists will change nothing. It will keeps us divided as we continue to foul our own nest.
